Staatsolie and Tax Department jointly launch three-year capacity-building programme

10 April 2026

Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname N.V. and the Tax Department have launched a three‑year programme aimed at strengthening the expertise of tax and customs officials in the oil and gas sector. On 10 April 2026, both organisations signed the cooperation document for this programme.

Through the three-year Tax Department Capacity-Building Programme, Staatsolie is making a targeted contribution to strengthening government institutions, ensuring that tax revenues from oil and gas can be managed with due care and deployed for the development of Suriname. Suriname’s offshore oil and gas sector presents significant opportunities but also places high demands on the government. The sector is technically complex and is developing rapidly. Accurate taxation and effective oversight therefore require up-to-date, specialised knowledge. This programme helps better prepare the Tax Department and Customs for these challenges.

Tax officials involved in the assessment and control of the oil and gas sector, as well as customs officials responsible for overseeing import and export flows within the sector, will receive training. The programme focuses on strengthening both knowledge and practical skills. It will be implemented in phases over a three-year period. Activities will take place in Suriname and, where necessary, will be supplemented by international knowledge exchange.

The Tax Department Capacity-Building Programme is a project associated with Staatsolie’s 45th anniversary in December 2025, under the theme “Empowering communities and institutions”. Through this initiative, Staatsolie is contributing to a better future for Suriname.
